How many days does a family need in Kashmir?
Four nights covers Srinagar with three day trips. Six or seven nights adds overnight stays in the hills, which shortens the drives but means packing twice. Choose the shortest route that fits your must-sees, because every extra hill station adds a road day.
4 nights / 5 days — one base
Srinagar for all four nights with day trips to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. The fewest hotel changes, which usually suits toddlers and grandparents best.
6 nights / 7 days — hills overnight

Srinagar is the base; Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are the day trips or overnight stops. Each sits at a different height, so pack layers rather than one set of clothes.
Srinagar
Dal Lake, houseboats and the Mughal gardens at Nishat and Shalimar. Airports, hospitals and the largest choice of family rooms are here, which is why most itineraries start and end in the city.

Both routes are itineraries we actually run, not sample copy. Reorder the days, drop a day trip or add a rest afternoon — your quotation follows whatever you settle on.
Five days: Srinagar base with three day trips
Four nights in Srinagar with no hotel changes — the easiest shape for toddlers, grandparents and anyone who would rather not repack every morning.
- Day 1 — Arrival and Shikara ride. Airport pickup, hotel or houseboat check-in, then an evening Shikara ride on Dal Lake.
- Day 2 — Gulmarg day tour. Drive up to the meadow with the Gondola ride optional, then back to Srinagar for the night.
- Day 3 — Pahalgam excursion. Betaab and Aru valley by local taxi with the Lidder river alongside the road, returning to Srinagar.
- Day 4 — Sonamarg day trip. Thajiwas Glacier walk or pony ride in the meadow of gold, back in Srinagar by evening.
- Day 5 — Srinagar sightseeing and departure. Local sights and a handicraft stop before the airport drop.

Seven days: Gulmarg and Pahalgam overnight
Six nights with stays in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, so the long drives are split by two nights in the hills instead of returning to the city every evening.
- Day 1 — Arrival and Shikara ride. Transfer from Srinagar airport to your hotel, then a Shikara ride on Dal Lake.
- Day 2 — Sonamarg day trip. About 80 km each way along the Sindh valley, with the Thajiwas Glacier walk or pony ride, then back to Srinagar for the night.
- Day 3 — Srinagar to Gulmarg. About 52 km, roughly 1 hour 35 minutes, with the Gondola ride; night in Gulmarg.
- Day 4 — Gulmarg to Pahalgam. A longer transfer day of roughly 137 km, with the Awantipura ruins on the way; night in Pahalgam.
- Day 5 — Pahalgam sightseeing. Betaab and Aru valley at an easy pace; second night in Pahalgam.
- Day 6 — Pahalgam to Srinagar. About 90 km and roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, then the Mughal gardens at Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, and the night in Srinagar.
- Day 7 — Departure. Airport drop from Srinagar.

Travelling with children and grandparents
Family trips in Kashmir are mostly about pacing and bedding. These are the points we settle with you before a quotation is issued.
Room configuration
Family rooms, adjoining rooms or a triple share depending on your group. Cribs and extra beds are requested from the hotel and confirmed in writing, never assumed.
Daily driving
Each hill station has its own road from Srinagar and the itinerary pages show the distances. One sightseeing cluster a day, with the afternoon free wherever possible.
Meals and water
Tell us about allergies, Jain or vegetarian meals and fussy eaters when you book. The meal plan in your quote is the one included; meals outside it are paid locally.
Snow, ponies and Gondola
Snow boots and jackets can be hired in Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Pony rides, sledge rides and Gondola tickets are paid locally unless your quotation lists them.
Altitude and medical needs
Gulmarg and Sonamarg sit high, so build in time to acclimatise and carry regular medication. Larger hospitals are in Srinagar; check with your doctor before a first mountain trip.
Documents and checkpoints
Carry photo identification for every traveller, children included, and keep it with you rather than in stored luggage on arrival and the highway stretches.

Which months work best for a family holiday
School holidays, temperature and snow line move together in Kashmir. Match the dates to what your family actually wants to do, then check access for that week.

Every family quotation has the same two lists, so you can compare it with any other operator line by line.
Normally included
- Accommodation for the stated number of nights, with hotel or houseboat names in the quotation.
- Meals on the plan you choose — usually breakfast and dinner, sometimes breakfast only.
- Airport pickup and drop, plus a private vehicle for the day-wise sightseeing listed in the itinerary.
- Driver allowances, tolls and parking for the included route, and a local coordinator reachable during the trip.
Normally extra
- Air or rail travel to and from Srinagar, unless the quotation says otherwise.
- Gondola tickets, pony and sledge rides, Shikara extensions, and entry fees to gardens or valleys.
- Union taxi charges inside Pahalgam and Sonamarg, where only local vehicles may run the last stretch.
- Lunch, personal expenses, travel insurance, and any service added after the quotation is accepted.
Children’s rates, extra-bed charges and complimentary-age rules depend on the hotel and are written into your quotation. Ask for the child policy in writing before you pay.

Is Kashmir a good destination for a family holiday with young children?
Yes, provided the days are not packed. Most family trips work best with one sightseeing cluster a day, a Srinagar base for the first nights and the hill stations as day trips or single overnight stops. Drives are the main constraint: several hours in a car is a lot for a small child, so ask for a route that keeps the transfers short.
Which family package is best for a first visit?
The 4-night / 5-day family itinerary, which stays in Srinagar throughout and visits Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg as day trips. If you want nights in the hills as well, the 6-night / 7-day route adds Gulmarg and Pahalgam stays. Both are quoted for your own dates and party size, so the total reflects your rooms rather than a brochure figure.
Can you arrange family rooms, adjoining rooms or extra beds?
We request the room type that fits your group — a family room, two adjoining rooms or a triple share — and confirm what the hotel has actually allocated in writing. Cribs, extra beds and interconnecting rooms depend on the property, so they are never promised until the hotel confirms them for your dates.
Do you provide child car seats?
A child seat or booster can be requested with the vehicle, but availability depends on the car supplied. Tell us the child’s age and weight at the enquiry stage and we will state in the quotation whether a seat is provided or whether you should bring your own.
Are pony rides, Gondola tickets and Shikara rides included?
Gondola tickets, pony and sledge rides, Shikara extensions and garden or valley entry fees are charged locally and appear in your inclusions only when the quotation lists them. Union taxis inside Pahalgam and Sonamarg are also separate, because only local vehicles run those last stretches.
Is Gulmarg or Sonamarg suitable for grandparents?
Both can work with a slower plan. Gulmarg’s meadow and Phase 1 Gondola are easy to reach from the car park, while Sonamarg’s glacier walk is uphill and often done by pony. Keep the first day light, avoid two high-altitude stops back to back, and check with your doctor if anyone in the party has heart, breathing or blood-pressure conditions.
Can we stay in a houseboat with children?
Yes, subject to availability and the property. Houseboat rooms vary in size and in winter the heating arrangement matters, so ask us to name the boat and confirm the room, bedding and heating in writing before you pay. A night on Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake can replace a hotel night on any itinerary.
What should we pack for children?
Layers rather than one heavy jacket, comfortable waterproof shoes, sun protection, and any medicine your child normally uses. Snow boots and jackets can be hired in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, so bulky winter gear does not have to travel with you.
How do payment and cancellation work for a family booking?
The quotation states the payment schedule, the child-rate policy and the cancellation terms that apply to your dates and hotels before any deposit is collected. Read the booking terms alongside the quotation, and ask for anything unclear in writing before you confirm.
