Spring (March – May)

Gardens bloom, the Tulip Garden opens (dates vary by year), and daytime temperatures reach the low 20s. Nights stay cool. Good for Srinagar sightseeing and photography. Srinagar hotel rates climb from late March.

Summer (June – August)

Peak season. All mountain routes are open, including Sonamarg Zero Point and the Srinagar–Leh highway. Gulmarg offers trekking. Book hotels and vehicles early — this is the busiest window.

Autumn (September – November)

Chinar trees turn amber through October. Fewer crowds than summer, lower hotel rates. Best months for photography and slow travel. November evenings get cold in Srinagar.

Winter (December – February)

Reliable snow in Gulmarg usually from January. Srinagar snowfall is unpredictable year to year. Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40 days, runs 21 December to 31 January. Confirm room heating before booking.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?
March to May for gardens and spring scenery. June to August for warm weather and full mountain access. September to November for autumn colours and fewer crowds. December to February for snow in Gulmarg, with reliable snow usually from January onward.

When does it usually snow in Kashmir?
Snow in Srinagar is variable. Gulmarg and higher-altitude areas usually see snow from late December through February, sometimes into March. Exact dates depend on the year and weather system.
How does the Gulmarg Gondola work?
Phase 1 runs from Gulmarg to Kongdoori. Phase 2 continues toward Apharwat and closes in high winds. Tickets are date and slot based. Gondola tickets are usually paid separately unless your quotation includes them.
Are Kashmir houseboats heated in winter?
Heating varies by category and property. Premium houseboats provide heating. Budget ones may offer a portable heater on request — which is not the same thing in a Srinagar winter. Confirm the exact heating arrangement before booking for winter travel.
